Practical steps to protect your data, people and systems — and support sustainable growth.

As businesses grow, so does the complexity of managing and protecting data. More employees, additional sales channels and a wider range of software platforms create opportunities, but also increase security risks.

My MBA research highlighted common challenges for small and growing businesses: limited internal expertise, cost pressures and fragmented systems. Recent government research also shows that smaller organisations are less likely to have implemented a broad range of recommended cybersecurity measures (1).

01 - The growing challenge

The move from on-premises servers to cloud-based software has made enterprise-level security more accessible and cost-effective for smaller businesses.

Solutions such as Microsoft Entra provide centralised identity and access management across Microsoft 365 and compatible business applications, including email, SharePoint, OneDrive and Dynamics 365 Business Central.

These tools offer scalable, subscription-based security capabilities without significant upfront infrastructure investment.

However, cloud adoption alone does not guarantee security. Businesses remain responsible for configuring systems correctly, managing access, and ensuring employees follow best practices.

02 - The cloud opportunity

As organisations scale, certain security practices should become non-negotiable:

  • Multi-factor authentication and strong password policies.

  • Individual user accounts — never shared credentials.

  • Role-based access controls that restrict access to appropriate information.

  • Regular software updates, secure backups and recovery procedures.

  • Employee awareness training and periodic security reviews.

These measures require clear ownership, documented policies and commitment from senior leadership. Data security should not be treated as an isolated IT issue — it is an essential part of building the operational foundations for sustainable growth.
